Smash Mouth Lead Vocalist Passes Away
Steve Harwell, former frontman for the pop-rock band “Smash Mouth”, has passed away at 56 years old.
Robert Hayes, manager for the singer and his band, released a statement to an international publication on Monday, 4 September, announcing that Harwell had died “peacefully and comfortably” at his home in Boise, Idaho. The star was surrounded by friends and family members.
“Steve’s iconic voice is one of the most recognisable voices from his generation,” the statement said, referring to the band’s hit singles, “All Star”, “I’m A Believer”, and “Walkin’ On The Sun” which became anthems in the 1990s and 2000s.
“He loved the fans and loved to perform …” Hayes said, before adding: “Steve lived a 100% full-throttle life. Burning brightly across the universe before burning out.”
While Hayes’ statement didn’t specify Harwell’s cause of death, he was reportedly in the final stages of liver failure at the time of his passing.
According to reports, the musician suffered from several physical and mental health-related ailments in recent years, including alcoholism, cardiomyopathy (a heart disease) and acute Wernicke encephalopathy (a neurological disorder).
Harwell stepped down from his role as lead vocalist of the band in 2021 to focus on his health.
